Phytophthora taxa associated with cultivated Agathosma, with emphasis on the P. citricola complex and P. capensis sp. nov. Naturalis

Agathosma species, which are indigenous to South Africa, are also cultivated for commercial use. Recently growers experienced severe plant loss, and symptoms shown by affected plants suggested that a soilborne disease could be the cause of death. A number of Phytophthora taxa were isolated from diseased plants, and this paper reports their identity, mating type, and pathogenicity to young Agathosma plants. Using morphological and sequence data seven Phytophthora taxa were identified: the A1 mating type of P. cinnamomi var. cinnamomi, P. cinnamomi var. parvispora and P. cryptogea, the A2 mating type of P. drechsleri and P. nicotianae, and two homothallic taxa from the P. citricola complex. Isoenzymatic variability of cassava accessions from different regions in Brazil Scientia Agricola

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family, and is widely cultivated in Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the isoenzymatic variability of 200 cassava accessions from the germplasm bank of Embrapa Amazonia Oriental. Seven groups were formed according to their origin: 1-Amazonas, 2-Amapa, 3-Bahia, 4-Para, 5-Rondonia, 6-Various, for accessions with a maximum of three individuals per place of origin, and 7 - Accessions of indefinite origin. Is there genetic variation in seedless Argentinean grapefruit? Implications for crop production and conservation JBAG

Increasing crop genetic diversity has the potential to enhance pollination services, by contributing to the long-term stability of agroecosystems. Different species of the genus Citrus, including grapefruit, are cultivated worldwide. In Argentina, 30% of the total national yield is concentrated in the northwestern part of the country where new cultivars have arisen. We analyzed genetic variation and diversity within and among four plantations of Citrus paradisi for 11 isozyme loci. Iodophanus carneus and I. testaceus (Ascomycota-Pezizales): Independent taxonomic identity or synonymy? A study of their morphology and isozymes Boletín de la Sociedad

The aim of this study was to delimit two Iodophanus species: I. carneus and I. testaceus , based on morphological characteristics and electrophoretic patterns of their intracellular isozymes. Twenty monosporic strains were used, including five belonging to I. granulipolaris as a control. Fourteen isozyme systems were tested, and the five having the best resolution selected: aspartate aminotransferase, esterases, alkaline phosphatase, glutamate dehydrogenase, and superoxide dismutase. The objective of this work was to characterize 27 potato genotypes, using molecular markers. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, RAPD techniques and isozymes of esterase, phosphoglucomutase and soluble proteins were analyzed in tubers, and isocitrate dehydrogenase, aspartate transaminase, phosphoglucomutase and peroxidase, in leaves. Se determinó la estructura de la diversidad genética y el patrón de cruzamiento en poblaciones naturales de Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco en México con base en información de isoenzimas. Para evaluar la diversidad genética se utilizó una muestra de 11 poblaciones naturales distribuidas en diferentes regiones geográficas (noroeste, noreste y centro) del país; el patrón de cruzamiento y su efecto sobre el nivel de endogamia sólo se evaluó en una muestra de tres poblaciones, representativas de cada región geográfica. Relationships among six herbal species (Curcuma) assessed by four isozymes Phyton

Four isozymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and cytochrome oxidase (COD) were studied for identification of six herbal species (Curcuma L.). All the 37 study specimens produced a total of 168 polymorphism isozyme bands. The genetic distance coefficients (GS) varied from 0.08 to 0.54. The dendrogram, obtained according to the polymorphism isozyme bands by the UPGMA method with the software NTSYS-pc2.1, contributed to improve the resolution of phylogeny. From the dendrogram, it was possible to differentiate between the wild and cultivated specimens of C. longa, and within C. sichuanensis species.

Isolation and partial purification of beta-galactosidases from cotyledons of two cowpea cultivars Rev. Bras. Fisiol. Veg.

Three isoforms of beta-galactosidases were isolated and partially purified from the cotyledons of quiescent seeds of Vita 3 and Vita 5 cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] cultivars differing in water and salt stress tolerance. The purification procedure consisted of ammonium sulfate fractionation, acid precipitation, ion exchange chromatography through DEAE-sephadex and affinity chromatography through Lactosyl-sepharose columns. Enzymatic variability in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) populations from Manaus-AM, Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.

Eighteen enzymatic loci were analysed in Aedes aegypti populations from four neighbourhoods in the city of Manaus. The analyses showed that the Downtown population was the most polymorphic (p = 55.6%) with higher observed and expected mean heterozygosities (Ho = 0.152 ± 0.052; He = 0.174 ± 0.052, respectively). The least variability was detected in the Coroado and Cidade Nova populations, both with polymorphism of 44.4%. The latter population presented the least observed heterozygosity (Ho = 0.109 ± 0.037). Para diseñar estrategias de conservación in situ de la diversidad genética del maíz, se requiere de valorar tanto a la diversidad como al potencial para incrementar la producción bajo el esquema de la agricultura tradicional como punto de referencia. Dado que el intercambio de semilla se da principalmente dentro de las comunidades rurales, se consideró al municipio de Ayapango, Edo. de Méx., para colectar las poblaciones de maíz que se manejan en aproximadamente el 20% de los hogares. Characterization and discrimination of three Rhopalosiphum species (Homoptera: Aphididae) based on isozymes Zoologia

Seventeen clones of Rhopalosiphum padi (Linnaeus, 1758), 14 of R. maidis (Fitch, 1856), and two of R. insertum (Walker, 1849), representing a wide range of host plants and geographic distribution, were examined electrophoretically to determine intra and interspecific variation. Twenty-one enzyme systems were tested using starch-gel techniques. The electromorph variation within species was low, as expected for parthenogenetic organisms. Frequency of heterozygotes was also relatively low for most populations. Nevertheless, the relationship of the P. infestans genotypes to the host’s genetic resistance is unclear. High temperature and salinity are the major ecological factors challenging crop productivity in the arid and semiarid regions of the world. Effects of high temperature (43-45°C) and salt stress (0.6 M) on Macrotyloma uniflorum (Lam.) Verdc. (Horse gram), were evaluated in terms of antioxidants and antioxidant enzymes. Both treatments caused typical stress responses in this tropical leguminosae. Oxidative stress indicators such as H2O2, TBARS, and proline were significantly elevated. Uma população natural de Copaifera langsdorffii Desf., espécie arbórea comumente encontrada no Brasil, foi estudada por meio da eletroforese de isoenzimas, visando determinar a taxa de cruzamento e o sistema reprodutivo. A população amostrada localiza-se ao longo de um trecho do rio Capivari, em uma área de preservação permanente (floresta ciliar), entre os municípios de Lavras e Itumirim, sul do Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Foram amostrados tecidos foliares de 20 indivíduos adultos da população e 400 indivíduos jovens (progênies) procedentes de sementes coletadas de 20 matrizes na população. Current analysis characterizes the effect of different fungicides often applied for pest control on a-and b-esterase patterns of four economically important table-wine grape cultivars (Italia, Rubi, Benitaka and Brasil) of Vitis vinifera. The a- and b-esterase patterns in bud leaves of the cultivars were assessed by native PAGE analysis. Cabrio Top® compound inhibited Est-2, Est-5, Est-6, Est-7, Est-8, Est-9 and Est-10 carboxylesterases, whereas Est-4, Est-11, Est-12, Est-13, Est-14 acetylesterases and Est-16 carboxylesterase were detected as weakly stained bands. Carboxylesterases and acetylesterases were also detected as weakly stained bands when exposed to fungicides Orthocide 500®, Positron Duo® and Folicur PM®. No changes in a- and b-esterase patterns...
